The newest US release Transformers Masterpiece figure is Soundwave and like the last few is also Toys R Us exclusive. For some reason the box says MP-02 but the figure is clearly a variant of Takara MP-13. I know Masterpiece Acid Storm who comes in the same case is labeled MP-01 but this makes little sense considering MP-10 Optimus, and even MP-08 Grimlock were released at TRU not all that long ago along with other retailer exclusives like Wal-Mart Starscream.
The short of it is Masterpiece Soundwave is excellent. I was skeptical that this guy could even be done as a worthwhile Masterpiece figure but the end result has exceeded my expectations. As a bonus you not only get Soundwave but 5 of his cassette minions and some other neat accessories seen in the G1 transformers cartoon. Everything is solid in every configuration, certainly a must have if you are into this type of adult collectable. More pics and commentary below the cut.
After lucking out on my first stop (thank you to my local TF club for the tip) I got the Toys R Us exclusive Masterpiece Optimus Prime version 2 and its worth every penny. Basically this is the Takara MP-10 with some very minor color differences. The packaging is amazing showing nearly everything you could ask for here… you still need to open it to fully appreciate how far this line has evolved so lets get on with it. About a year ago I saw an announcement for the upcoming Diamond Select 1/15th scale KITT from Knight Rider. Being a big fan of the 80’s show, I’ve been eagerly awaiting its release ever since. Diamond Select has been giving early looks at the progress and with a few minor exceptions this looked like a pretty fun collectible to add to the toy room.
Last week I stumbled upon one at the local Toys R Us completely by chance and for the most part I’m pretty satisfied with the final product.
So I stumbled on a discussion about the upcoming MattyCollector Back to the Future Hoverboard toy/prop replica. The short of it is there are a number of complaints regarding the misrepresented accuracy of the final product in relation to the actual “Hero” movie prop. These guys take hoverboard fanaticism to the next level and I really respect that. Some of the stuff is over the top but the attention to detail is staggering. The fans feel misled, rants, ravings, and personal attacks are flying… cats and dogs getting married… People have too much time on their hands and I had an entertaining read as a result.
Got this the other day. She is one of my new favorite truly playable figures and my second TF Prime RID deluxe. The transformation is so simple which usually is a bad thing, but in this case it really works to the toys advantage.
It’s not the same level of awesome as say a masterpiece but those are a totally different type of fun. Being so simple and easy means you can spend more time enjoying the two modes which are stellar even with the back kibble.
It’s no surprise that Transformers Prime: Robots in Disguise Wheeljack is an excellent figure. Out of the gate Hasbro had a winner on their hands. The show is well done, the characters are well-developed, and the toys are following in the trend.
Wheeljack has always been one of my favorite Transformers characters. Heck the guy created the Dinobots in G1, essentially the father of the most BAMF of them all; Grimlock. Wheeljack is the only Transformer I would choose to collect above Optimus Prime and I wasn’t going to start collecting this line unless I could find the updated version. To me its fitting that he is the first TF Prime RID figure I came across. Continue reading Transformers Prime Robots in Disguise – Wheeljack→
The latest Masterpiece Transformer in the collection is the Toys R Us exclusive Grimlock, which is nearly identical to the Japanese MP-08 by Takara. This continues the trend with this line by having an advanced and complex transformation with well executed gimmicks.
Features of note are color changing eyes in both robot and dinosaur modes giving a choice between blue or red depending on your preference. There is also some die cast metal parts such as the toes and internal frame components. The dino mouth snaps shut with a push of a button, and one of his hands can illuminate the sword and gun accessory. A crown is also included so you can have King Grimlock! More pictures after the cut.
Today I ran across these three while out picking up some socks of all things. I’ve been on the hunt for the Transformers Generations Wheeljack since early summer. Had all but given up on finding one. The Classic Thundercats Lion-O was all alone and too cool to pass up. At that point my willpower was gone so I threw in the GI Joe Skystriker reissue. I’ve always regretted getting rid of my original and ever since hearing of a reissue I’ve been wanting another.
